Google Workshop Day

On the 7th December Downham Market Academy were invited to host a day-long digital citizenship workshop as part of Be Internet Citizens, a nationwide programme that Google runs in partnership with ISD (Institute for Strategic Dialogue) as part of their YouTube ‘Creators for Change’ initiative. The programme seeks to teach secondary school students vital digital citizenship skills to enable them to have a positive voice online.  Elizabeth Truss MP attended and commented on how articulate the students were.

A Level Art

Well done to the A level Art students who attended the Drawing and Mark Making Masterclass in Norwich last week. This was organised by Rebecca Nicolson who also attended. The session was run by professional artist Malca Schotten, who introduced the students to a range of techniques in charcoal and pen. The aim was to build confidence and experiment with drawing styles. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day, and have brought back a selection of new ideas to use, including how to overcome the fear of making mistakes, and a greater confidence in working large-scale.

English and Film: DMA Film Classes Produce The Christmas Spirit

As part of the development of their practical skills, the students in the Film Classes at DMA have been shooting and editing their own versions of a John Lewis Christmas Advert the last 2 weeks.  Beginning with writing a screenplay centred around ‘giving the perfect gift’ and storyboarding their 60 second adverts, students then focussed on costume & set design, and soundtrack resourcing, (all while considering the convention of the genre they are producing), before shooting and editing their final products with the inclusion of post-effect graphics, the creation of a tagline, implementation of an external soundtrack and editing so the audience will react in the specific way that the producers intended.  While  these skills are all building to the requirements of the final formal coursework the students will undertake in the Summer term, we like to think that some of the output just might cause Elton John himself to shed a tear or two and has put us firmly in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Bauble Competition

I am delighted that Downham Market Academy pupils have been chosen as winners in 2 out of the 4 categories for the Norfolk Police Christmas bauble design competition! Our students won the category ‘home security’ and ‘looking out for each other’.. Well done, and thank you for taking part.
