27th– 31st May Half Term
Year 10 London Art Trip
An exciting trip to The Tate Britain in London is planned for Year 10 GCSE Art students on 18th July. They will view the Van Gogh in Britain exhibition, and explore the permanent collections of artwork. This visit is an important part of preparation for GCSE art, and we hope that every Year 10 art student will be able to attend.
Trip consent forms have been sent to parents of Year 10 art students by email this week if you have not yet received an email about the trip, please email r.nicholson@downhammarketacademy to confirm your current email address. We will then forward you the trip details. Many thanks.
Good luck to all year 13 students who are now sitting their formal A level examinations, and well done to students who have completed coursework assessments. A hugh congratulations should also go to the leavers ball committee who are tirelessly working towards raising money for their leavers ball, fundraising activities have ranged from bake sales, tombolas and today making and selling delicious ice cream smoothies and cookies – a real end of term treat!
Good luck to Cameron who is representing Norfolk at an event in Dublin after half term where young people from across the whole world are working together on anti-bullying. We will be sharing some of Cameron’s experiences with other students and hopefully implementing some new ideas into our approach to preventing bullying.
Careers Support – Year 10
Our Year 10 students will soon be required to make applications to post-16 providers. Applications to DMA sixth form will open in September, as will applications to local colleges. To support our students with their next steps, a number of activities are planned.
- 5th June, some Year 10 students will be spending the day at CWA, King’s Lynn to sample a taster lesson of their choice.
- 1st July, DMA Sixth Form is hosting a post-16 event, to give prospective A level students a taste of the A Level choices available to them and experience studying at DMA Sixth Form.
- 18th July, DMA is hosting the Royal Marines for the day, the only Academy in West Norfolk to do so. Year 10 and Year 12 PE students will have the opportunity to work with the Marines for a whole lesson, and to explore what life working as a Marine could be like.
- 18th July, we have a post 16 event planned for both students and parents. The event will commence at 12.30pm for all students to peruse throughout the afternoon. From 3pm to 6pm the event will also be open to parents too. This will be an opportunity to pick up prospectuses, talk to staff from each provider and start the process of gathering the information necessary to make informed decisions. This event will be attended by DMA Sixth Form, Easton College, CWA, the RAF, the Army and Barclays Bank. There will also be an opportunity to meet a colleague from the Department of Work & Pensions for a CV Boot Camp! Students can bring their CV’s for feedback or gather support regarding how to write an impressive CV. Save the date!
Further support can be found on Norfolk’s website called www.helpyouchoose.org Here you will find extremely useful information about post-16 providers including details of all open evenings at local providers. This website is also the site students will use to make their post-16 applications on, to any post-16 provider in Norfolk. Further information about this website will also be available to students and parents on 18th July.
Duke of Edinburgh
On weekend of 11th and 12th May both Year 9s and 10s went on their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. The year 10s were hiking around Thetford forest, they successfully navigated and camped their way to completing the expedition section of the Bronze D of E – a massive congratulations to them.
Year 9s were successful on their practise expedition, and are well set for their assessment expedition in July. Current Year 8s will get an opportunity in September to sign up for Bronze D of E and Year 10s in September will get the opportunity to sign up for Silver – even if they have not completed Bronze.
