Parent Information Evening
It was great to see so many parents at the Parent Information Evenings this week.
If you were unable to make the events we will be adding the information to the school website next week.

Year 7 Residential
We introduced students and parents to an exciting residential trip for Year 7 students next summer – camping at Eaton Vale Activity Centre followed by a day at the Royal Norfolk Show. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work together on different activities and develop their leadership and communication skills – the staff attending are really looking forward to it! We would like all students to take part in the trip – if there are any concerns or questions regarding the trip, please do get in touch with Mr Eastwood at the Academy. Parents of Year 7 students should check their emails for correspondence from “Evolve Norfolk” for more details on the trip and a link to the online consent form. Payment should be made through the ParentMail account.

Sixth Form Update
On Monday 23rd September, year 12 and 13 students attended the F4tal It wont happen to me presentation given by the Norfolk Constabulary. This presentation was part 1 of 2 and informed students that every year over 400 young people are injured or killed in crashes in Norfolk, with 3 out of 4 road deaths being male. The presentation highlighted to students that Speeding, Drink and Drug driving, mobile phone use and not wearing seatbelts were the four fatal behaviours which contributed to road traffic accidents. Young drivers and students learning to drive or considering learning in the future were also reminded that passing your test does not make you experienced Dont get caught out by your inexperience.
Part 2 of this presentation will be held on Monday 11th November, 2019 this will involve a reconstruction of a real crash, with the narrator being the young driver involved in the accident, who has become an ambassador for this campaign; the presentation will involve the police, fire and ambulance service.

Open Evening
Due to Open evening school is closing early for pupils. They will have an extended break time where they will be able to purchase hot and cold food. The canteen will not be open at lunchtime. The pupils will be dismissed from lessons at 12:00 where the buses will depart at 12:15.

Languages
All students studying a language are set vocabulary to learn on a weekly basis. Please encourage your child(ren) and support them with this vocabulary learning – a little often is the key to success. As our homework focus is learning, we complete regular vocabulary tests to ensure pupils complete the homework set. A success rate of 70% is expected, so please support your child in helping them learn and practise this vocab.

Homework can be found on the school website https://downhammarketacademy.co.uk/homework-booklets/

The Leitner technique is particularly useful when learning vocabulary – please use this video link for further details.

Rugby
Downham Markey Academys U16 rugby team beat Framingham Earl 36 – 14 in the first round of the County Cup. Try scorers were Josh Brooke (3), Will Easton, Sam Dickerson and Jake Cavill. Well done to all of the players!

Non Uniform Day
Many students showed their support for the charity Jeans for Genes last Friday by wearing denim on our non uniform day. We raised well over 500 for this charity which supports victims of genetic disorders and their families.

Our next non uniform day will be on Friday 15 November to raise money for the BBC Children in Need appeal. News on the theme for the day will be shared nearer the time.
