Thank you to all the students who completed a survey regarding their welfare and any bullying they have experienced. The results have been used to inform an action plan to improve our approaches to preventing bullying and supporting the victims of bullying if it does occur.
All instances of bullying should be reported to the Academy so that we can tackle this and ensure that it stops. There is an online form that students and parents/carers can complete through our website here: https://downhammarketacademy.co.uk/forms/bullyingincident–report/
Academy Welcomes New Staff
On Wednesday, eleven new teachers attended an Induction Day for new staff, where they were given a full introduction to Academy life, and were able to meet their departments and a selection of classes. We look forward these new faces joining our teaching staff fulltime from September.
Harry Potter WOW Day
Year 5 students had a wonderful time in the Downham Hogwarts Art Department on Friday. Working in the darkened surroundings of the Hogwarts Banqueting Hall, to the music of Harry Potter, they used their wands to draw expressive pictures in ink. They experimented with expressing emotions on a large scale, in a collaborative piece. We were impressed with enthusiasm of the pupils, and the quirky and characterful marks they made.
We are looking forward to welcoming over 400 parents and students to the BBQ next Friday, 4-6pm. The uniform suppliers will also be in the Assembly Hall for the duration of this event so please take advantage of this ready for September.
Happy Chick Company
We have had 6 fluffy yellow chicks delivered to the Science department this week and students are having the opportunity to see, touch and sometimes hold them during their Science lesson until next Thursday. This links into our curriculum with selective breeding, evolution and beak shape, producing food through agriculture, habitats and food chains.
Science Event Thetford Academy
On Tuesday, some of our most talented science students in Year 8 and 9 travelled to
Thetford Academy to take part in a series of workshops taught by students from the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Activities included harvesting and preserving their own DNA; making “magic” disappearing ink; making hand cream and moisturiser; sustainable fishing methods and probability trees. A lecturer from the University also provided a snapshot as to what University life is like in a very inspirational talk. Everyone had a great time and got to take home souvenirs including a DNA necklace and their hand cream. It was a pleasure to take such motivated students to experience this and I hope that the day has opened their eyes to the possibilities of studying science to a higher level.
Royal Norfolk Show
On Thursday 27th our Year 7 students attended the Royal Norfolk Show. It was great to see so many of our students attending the day. The students had a fantastic time and showed exemplary behaviour representing Downham Market Academy wonderfully.
