Year 10 Assembly

Year 10 students received an assembly on Tuesday morning that looked at life opportunities. This is a big question and requires some big thinking time by students with the support of family and the school. Please over the coming evenings talk to them about their aims and goals. This time next year they will have applied to Athena to study A-Levels, Higher level Apprenticeship courses or to go to college, we want your child to know their journey and be confident in the decisions they are making – aiming high! Please do look at the website https://www.icanbea.org.uk/ and https://helpyouchoose.org/content/ to support you in these conversations.

Year 10 Parents Evening

The Parents’ Evening for Year 10 students is next Thursday (6 February) – please do make appointments with your child’s teachers using the online booking system: https://parentsbooking.co.uk/downhammarket

Non-Uniform Day

Many students at the Academy support our “Go Green for MacMillan” non uniform event today – the final total raised will be shared in assemblies next week.  Thank you to everyone who supported the event to raise money for this great cause.

Valentines Roses

The Year 11 prom committee have arranged, with the support of Blue Bells Florist, to fund raise by selling roses to students in school. These are being ordered and will be hand delivered by the prom committee on Friday 14th February during first lesson. They cost 2 for a single hand delivered rose and are available to buy during form time from J11, year 11 students circulating forms and during break in the canteen front of the assembly hall.

Valentines Disco

The PTA, Friends of Downham Market Academy (FODMA), have organised their first large-scale evening event in the form of a Year 7, 8 and 9 Valentines Disco on Thursday 13th February, held at the Athena Campus Hall at Ryston. For more information please see the attached flyer or visit  https://www.facebook.com/FriendsofDMA/.

Tickets for the Valentines disco are on sale from the finance office at a cost of 3 each. The finance office is open from 8:40 – 9:10am each morning.

Year 8 Trip

Year 8 students visited Cambridge University for the second chapter of their Insight Discover programme. 12 students gave carefully prepared speeches on topics of controversy which they were passionate about and presented their very own product for university students; ‘sound specs’ to over 70 students from other schools-another fantastic opportunity for students to develop their confidence in a highly ambitious setting.

Year 11 GCSE Drama Performance

Last night parents were invited to observe year 11 do a practice run for their GCSE performances. They performed a number of short sketches covering a range of topics. The standard was very high and they all did themselves incredibly proud and were a credit to their fantastic teacher Amy Chapman who has worked so hard with them over the last year and a half. In two weeks time they will perform for the examiner and we wish them all the best.
