School Closure Update 24/03/2020

Downham Market Academy & Athena College: Closure Update

I would like to thank every member of the Downham Market Academy community who has been so supportive, particularly over the last few days during this very challenging time.

As you know, all schools were closed to the majority of students from Friday 20 March but were expected to remain open for the most vulnerable children and those of key workers.

We currently do not have any students attending Downham Market Academy as parents and carers feel that they are able to keep their child(ren) safe at home, without the need for us to remain open.  This allows us to keep our staff safe too by telling them to stay at home.

We have taken advice from the Local Authority and , as from 3pm today, Downham Market Academy and Athena College will be closed to all.  If any key workers or parents of vulnerable children feel that their situation has changed, they need to contact me by email ( by 6pm in order that we can plan to open the following day.  However, this will only be where there is an absolute need and I will contact any parents by telephone that evening to discuss further.  If it is after 6pm, please do still email but also call the dedicated support line for parents at Norfolk County Council regarding school provision: 0344 800 8020.

Yesterdays announcement from the Prime Minister and the ensuing advice for schools is very clear: the most effective way to save lives is to slow the spread of the coronavirus and the best way to do that is for stringent social distancing.  This means limiting any contact between individuals from different households to the absolute minimum during this three-week lock down that is as a result of this national emergency.

All of our staff, health permitting, will continue to work from home and provide new work and feedback for students to support learning at home.  Please do visit the Closure Portal on our website where you will find all the work and relevant contact information for subject support, submitting work and password resets:  For those without internet access, we will be in touch regarding ongoing provision of work as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your continued support.

Kind regards

Mark Eastwood
